Delivering a 21st Century Medical Education

New Medical Education Building

Set for completion in 2022, the new medical education building will shape the future of healthcare in North Carolina and beyond.

  • Meet the demand for more physicians by growing class size incrementally from 190 to 240
  • Deliver a modern medical education—highly individualized, collaborative and rigorous—aligned with the Translational Education at Carolina curriculum (TEC)
  • Connect students in integrated, core clinical rotations in Chapel Hill and across the state in Asheville, Charlotte, Wilmington, Greensboro and Raleigh—and facilitate longitudinal learning through technology

Heart of the Medical Student Experience

“The new UNC Medical Education Building will be the home and heart of the medical student experience. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this project. The new building will be the inspiration for the future of medical education around the country.”

– Katie Butler, MD Candidate, Class of 2019
Planning Committee, New UNC Medical Education Building

Transforming the Educational Experience

Students

Improving health outcomes and educating next-generation Tar Heel doctors is our calling and our mission.

  • Give students the freedom to interact closely with mentors and pursue their passions in medicine through enhanced scholarships
  • Grow opportunities for students to care for the rural and underserved, both locally and globally and to pursue life-changing research opportunities
  • Address health outcomes, equity and disparity through student research and initiatives like the Student Health Action Coalition, the oldest student-run, free health clinic in the country
  • Build a pipeline for the future with our nationally recognized Medical Education Development Program

Pursuing Passion

“Funding from the Ray ’62 and Christine Hayworth Medical Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professorship allowed me to explore my passion and curiosity on how to best prepare future physicians to deliver compassionate and equitable healthcare, while improving the health of diverse populations. I am profoundly grateful to continue my career at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and for the opportunities the Distinguished Teaching Professorship made possible.”

– Kenya McNeal-Trice, MD
Professor of Pediatrics, Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Pediatrics, and Pediatric Residency Program Director

Championing Innovation and Excellence

Faculty

We commit to faculty throughout their careers in their work as teachers, mentors, investigators and patient care providers.

  • Recruit and retain compassionate clinician educators through endowed professorships
  • Honor mid-career faculty with a track record of exemplary leadership, teaching and educational innovation with teaching awards
  • Invest in developing faculty leaders through the Academy of Educators

Supporting the Next Generation

“UNC provided an unrivaled environment for me to learn and become the physician I wanted to be.   I hope to support UNC in its mission and provide the next generation of students the flexibility to take their own paths.”

– A.J. Rogers, MD, MBA 2014
